The Symbol of Chianti: The Black Rooster

The Black Rooster is the iconic emblem of Chianti, adopted as the distinctive symbol for Chianti Classico wine by the consortium that unites the producers.

The Legend of the Black Rooster and the Boundaries of Chianti

According to medieval legend, during the conflicts between Florence and Siena for control of the Chianti territory, the two factions decided to delimit the boundaries by sending two knights from their respective cities to the crow of the rooster.

The Historical Roots of the Symbol

From a historical perspective, the connection between the Black Rooster and Chianti Classico dates back to the 14th century when the "Chianti league," under the control of the Republic of Florence, chose the black rooster as a symbol for the control of the Chianti territory.

The Black Rooster in the artistic and historical context of Florence

This initial bond is evident in the bas-relief "Allegory of Chianti" painted by Vasari in the Hall of the Five Hundred (Palazzo Vecchio, Florence) in 1547, where a shield displays the black rooster.

In 1924, the consortium of Chianti Classico wine was founded, adopting the black rooster as its symbol. The logo bears the date 1716 when the Chianti territory was defined by the decree of Cosimo III de'Medici.

Spread and Iconic Representations

In Chianti, the symbol and statues depicting the Black Rooster are widely spread. This is a representation that can be admired in Greve in Chianti, but there are many others throughout the entire Chianti region.
